In art class with Ms. Stiles we are traveling on an exciting journey to discover the wonder of art - from the prehistoric caves of Lascaux in France to the infamous Pop Art of Andy Warhol, Jim Dine and Claes Oldenburg.
The kindergarteners love exploring different mediums like pastels and watercolors, and especially the fruity-scented markers! When the first grade students studied the art of the Lascaux caves they pretended that they were cave artists and drew the prehistoric animals with charcoal and make-believe berries.
One project the second and third grade students had fun with was making 3 D ice cream cones out of construction paper and newspaper, then painting them pink for strawberry or brown for chocolate, after studying the art of Claes Oldenburg. He fabricated over-sized hamburgers and ice cream sundaes in burlap and painted them in bright enamel.
The fourth and fifth grade students enjoyed creating their own illuminated letters. In the Middle Ages when books were written by hand, artists created beautiful letters in gold and embellished them with make-believe animals and plants. After looking at many illuminated letters the students painted one of their initials in gold or silver and added dragons and decorative flowers to them.
I am thrilled to teach art to the students at White Oak because they truly are very enthusiastic about discovering all the great art in our world and having the opportunity to recognize their own budding creativity along the way.
